August 27 puts A Plague Tale and Star Wars on two very different battlefields

August's last Thursday has become an unexpectedly interesting release date. Asobo Studio and Bit Reactor are both launching major games on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on August 27, but the overlap ends there.

Resonance is taking A Plague Tale further back before moving it forward

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy takes place fifteen years before Requiem and shifts the lead role to a younger Sophia. Her journey begins after a failed heist sends her fleeing Venice with Leni toward Minotaur Island, where her family's history becomes tangled with the Macula and a mystery reaching back more than two thousand years.

Asobo has also changed the physical rhythm of the series. Sophia is built for direct melee combat. She can parry, chain dagger and sword attacks and use a grappling hook to pull opponents out of position or throw them into environmental hazards.

Stealth has not vanished. Neither have puzzles. Ancient mechanisms revolve around manipulating light with a stolen Minoan sphere, and parts of the island are occupied by a pursuing creature that is considerably less interested in giving Sophia a fair sword fight.

One release has a day-one subscription advantage

Focus Entertainment is launching Resonance on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on August 27. It will also enter Xbox Game Pass on day one and support Xbox Play Anywhere.

The latest major pre-release beat arrived on August 12 with a story trailer centered on Sophia's escape from Venice, Minotaur Island and the early history of the Macula.

Zero Company is asking what Star Wars looks like with three Action Points

Bit Reactor's game starts from a much more mathematical problem. Each squad member gets three Action Points per turn. Movement distance costs AP, different weapons have different firing costs, utilities generally consume a point, and Overwatch trades the rest of an Operator's turn for control of a chosen firing cone.

Cover, elevation and range affect hit chances. Injuries persist beyond an individual firefight, and on standard difficulty a third Injury permanently kills an Operator.

That risk extends to a roster mixing authored characters with recruits created by the player. Hawks can also be customized, and Operators can change specializations as the campaign develops.

The tactical layer continues after everyone puts the blasters away

The Den acts as Zero Company's headquarters between missions. Players recruit Operators, heal injuries, modify weapons, improve facilities and manage relationships between squad members there.

Those Bonds have mechanical weight. Stronger relationships enable Cross Training bonuses, while story dilemmas can make particular squadmates approve or disapprove of Hawks' choices. Missions and Operations also advance campaign Cycles, meaning some opportunities on the galaxy map can expire while the player is dealing with something else.

EA says that map spans more than 150 planets. The campaign's central enemy is the Infinite Coil, a Separatist-aligned organization led by Kundri Fathom. StarWars.com used the final trailer on August 17 to reveal more of Fathom and the threat Zero Company is trying to contain.

The first crowded release day arrives before September does

Zero Company launches August 27 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the same platforms as Resonance. EA is selling Standard and Deluxe editions, with the additional Deluxe material focused on cosmetic packs and weapon appearances.

So the choice is unusually clean. One game is a darker action-adventure prequel built around Sophia, close combat and ancient puzzles. The other is a squad tactics game where a bad position can still be following one of your soldiers several missions later.
